As we celebrate the month of Earth Day and Arbor Day, we realize the importance of teaching the next generation about living an eco-friendly life.  As the old Latin proverb says (translated) "by teaching, we learn."

Children practice respecting their communities and the environment when they see the adults in their lives doing the same.  This respect leads to good habits and a healthier diet.  They realize the importance of conserving energy and water.  A new garden-related activity, or STEM activities inspire them to create environmentally-friendly practices and products.

Kids spend the majority of their day in school.  The lessons learned in school can also make them more environmentally aware.

For example: How are math and the environment related?

Math helps to solve real-life problems.  The environment is a real-life issue.  Math helps analyze environmental data, such as the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions during the pandemic.  Math also encourages students to analyze different environmental solutions, such as how much recycling actually helps the environment.

The following products are made in the USA and created using good practices to reduce their carbon footprint, while benefiting children's lives.

1. Prenatal Vitamins

Prenatal vitamins lower your baby's risk of complications and birth defects.  They contain the vitamins and minerals that Mama's body needs to sustain a healthy pregnancy.

Actif makes a prenatal vitamin that is naturally-sourced, and includes DHA, EPA, Omega-3, Folic Acid, Probiotics, Iron, Calcium, and numerous Vitamins A and B.  It is manufactured in an FDA-approved cGMP facility (Current Good Manufacturing Practice).  This ensures proper and safe manufacturing of medications.

2. Cloth Diapers

Stock up on Amazon: Thirsties One Size All In One

Cloth diapers are making a comeback.  The rising cost of disposable diapers has created another financial burden on parents.  One benefit of cloth diapering is that they can be used from one child to the next, as long as the diapers are cared for properly.

The options for cloth diapers can be overwhelming - size, fabric, covers, pockets, oh my!  The Thirsties diaper pictured above is a simple one for those just starting out.  It is the closest style to disposable diapers.  It's also a good idea to have some on-hand.  As any parent will tell you, you will inevitably run out of diapers.  It helps to have a stash to get you through until your next run to the store, or delivery.

The One Size refers to the fact that the diaper can be used from birth to potty.  As you can see in the picture above (bottom right), the snaps can be adjusted as your baby grows.

The All-In-One portion of the description is that there is only one part.  There is no cover needed, or a cloth part that goes in a pocket.

Another obstacle that parents face is the laundering portion.  Each manufacturer gives specific instructions on how to keep the diapers clean.  A drying rack, a cloth diaper sprayer and shield, and a wet bag will come in handy, though.

3. School-Age Kids

K'Nex, at first glance, may not seem like an obvious choice for eco-friendly toy.  Plastic......However, K'Nex manuafactures in a zero-waste, landfill-free facility in Pennsylvania.

K'Nex engages kids' imaginations to construct interactive toys and models.  The different models move.  This set inspires their natural curiosity and creativity by discovering how building system works.  They construct their own amusement park rides, bridges, and cranes.

The STEM building set (can also be bought separately) furthers elementary-school aged children's knowledge of science, technology, engineering, and math concepts (STEM).
🙶Students will learn about gear configurations, gear ratios, rotational speed, mechanical advantage and more! 🙷

4. Tweens

Aim to hydrate on Amazon: Epic Nalgene Water Bottle with Filter

Hydration makes sense at any age.  Tweens have many changes happening to their bodies and minds.  Proper hydration improves mood, alertness and memory.  Hydration helps children maintain a healthy weight and keep a safe body temperature, which are both important to their overall health and fitness.

5. Teens

The benefits of journaling are well documented.  The teenage years present a time of transition from childhood to adulthood.

Teenagers face issues such as body image, bullying, depression, sexual activity, alcohol use, peer pressure, academic success, college acceptance, and the list goes on.

Journaling empowers a teen to organize thought patterns and make sense of how they are feeling about certain situations.  This allows them to express themselves honestly and with no judgement.  Having a safe place like this can also inspire them.

Conclusion

Finding eco-friendly products made in the USA for kids may pose a challenge, but with challenge comes change.
