Welcome back to another Under $20 Tuesday.  This week we are focused on starting a garden.  While there are many tools needed to start and maintain a garden, you can start with a few basics and add-on as you go.

Here you will find garden accessories made in the USA that will help you start a garden without breaking the bank.

1. Soil Scoop

via Amazon:

A soil scoop digs up grass and weeds. The serrated edges facilitate cutting through edges and other difficult places to get through.

The scoop is made with 18 gauge premium stainless steel blade, [and the] handle [is] made from recycled materials.

2. Microgreen Seeds

Microgreens contain a high amount of vitamins and nutrients.  This 6-pack seed kit allows the garden of microgreens to be grown all year long.  To have a year-round garden with healthy food means a healthier you, less trips to the market, and more money in your pocket.

Back To The Roots seed packets are 100% organic and not genetically modified.  Their seeds are also USA-made.

3. Pot Planter

CowPots are made from cow manure, which makes them biodegrade faster.  Because roots penetrate the cowpots, the plants can be planted in the ground with the pot.  This spares the plant from transplant shock.

4. Grow Bag

via Amazon Smart Pot®Grow Bag

A grow bag is a good alternative to pots. They are heavy duty and UV safe. Grow bags also help to avoid overwatering, since the excess water drains through the fabric. This makes root rot less likely, and helps maintain the health of the soil.

5. Plant Markers

Seed markers inform gardeners of what lies beneath. These steel markers elevate the marker from utilitarian to beautiful. Some markers even say, "Weeds," and "Oops," to add a sense of humor to your garden.

RealSteel makes their steel products in the heart of Texas, using American steel. Weather-resistant, standing strong, American made.

Conclusion

Finding garden tools made in the USA to start a garden may pose a challenge, but with challenge comes change.

How will YOU be part of the change?

Welcome to Part 3 of the series of how to start a garden. Memorial Day weekend is coming soon, and now is a good time to prepare the outdoor space for summer entertaining.

1. Shovel

Shovels make it easy to remove soil, and move around different materials, such as dirt, gravel, and snow.  To find out which shovel is best for you, read this article.

PredatorTools® makes their digging tools and shovels in the USA.  It's important to note that their tools are used by the United States military.  Other industries also include forensics, archaeology, and search and rescue.

2. Tool Bag
Having a bag that holds your gardening tools helps keep things organized.  This bag by Garrett Wade was made intentionally to be large enough to fit the most used tools, but not too large that it becomes a junk drawer of sorts.  It is hand-sewn by master leather-workers, so each one has its own unique look.

3. Lopper

Loppers offer gardeners another option to saws and pruning shears.  They cut through thicker branches and stems. Both hands are required to use them, versus pruning shears that can be held in one hand.  The anodized aircraft aluminum provides heavy-duty construction to reinforce stability with more challenging gardening projects.

4. Wheelbarrow
via Home Depot: True Temper Wheelbarrow

Wheelbarrows help transport fertilizer, mulch and other gardening materials throughout the yard.  This one has a flat-free tire, steel tray and steel handles.

1. Weeder

This is the weeder that saves your back.  The s
teel gripping prongs and foot lever provide a quality product that will become a go-to tool.

2. Rain Wand
  **Note: Hose not included.**

A watering wand allows a large amount of water to be added to your plants and trees. It regulates the amount of water and imitates rainfall on the garden bed.

Note: The nozzles are made in the USA.  The wands are assembled in the USA.

3. Crevice Tool

A crevice tool edges around landscaped beds and borders. It is handmade from reused concrete reinforcement rod and black walnut, while also using traditional blacksmith techniques. There is a certain nostalgia when tools are handmade in this manner.

4. Chickadee Feeder

While feeders may not be the first thing you think of for a garden, they attract birds. Birds, in turn, keep your garden bug-free with their bug-eating habits.

This chickadee feeder is hand thrown on the potter's wheel in North Carolina. Each one is individually made, featuring a drainage hole, wooden perch and nylon cord hanger.

5. Kneeling Pad

A kneeling pad is very convenient to have when on the ground tending to your garden.  It keeps your knees comfortable, while also allowing you to avoid bending over to tend to the garden.  That can cause dizziness or vertigo-like symptoms.

Having the tools for proper body mechanics protects you from injury.  Whether you are weeding your garden or planting seeds, a kneeling pad adds a level of safety and comfort to this fun new hobby.

New Year's Resolution: How To Get Healthy and Get Fit in the Year Ahead

DISCLOSURE: THIS POST MAY CONTAIN AFFILIATE LINKS, MEANING I GET A COMMISSION IF YOU DECIDE TO MAKE A PURCHASE THROUGH MY LINKS, AT NO COST TO YOU. PLEASE READ MY DISCLOSURE FOR MORE INFO.  (HINT: LINKS IN RED ARE AFFILIATE LINKS.) ALL INFORMATION VALID AS OF POSTING DATE.

 New Year's Resolution: Get Healthy!

How Committed Are You To Practicing Healthy Habits This Year?

FEBRUARY 15, 2023 to MAY 3, 2024

Remember those dates!  It can take between 46 and 488 days to develop a new habit with daily practice.  Simply put, healthy habits improve your health and wellness.

Remember that starting new habits is easy - keeping that momentum going is where the challenge begins.

Start with something small and measurable.

1. Exercise more.

                      Remember you are worth it!

This is what you tell yourself and your loved ones when you make this commitment to exercising more and sticking to it.  Whatever gets you to continue doing it, do it!
  • Get an accountability buddy.
  • See if your health insurance has any helpful resources.
  • Join a challenge, such as the burpees challenge above.
  • Create a group with your neighbors or coworkers.
Equip yourself for the weather.  Grab your yoga mat or snowshoes and go enjoy your beautiful surroundings.

2. Eat Fresh.

The benefits of growing your own garden far exceed the learning curve of starting it.

  • Gardening reduces stress.
  • Growing your own food reduces cost of groceries.
  • Inviting people over creates a social aspect to enjoying your garden.
  • Homegrown food tastes better.
  • Eating your colors protects you against diseases.  Can you say purple carrots?

This map on the USDA's website will tell you in what zone you are.  You can then do a web search to see what grows well in your area and the best time to plant the seeds.

Your local universities can also be great resources of information.  Harvard started their community garden back in 2010, a school that was founded in 1636!

3. Stay hydrated.

Water needs vary by activity level and overall health status.  The University of Missouri provides an equation to help you calculate how much water you need.

Thirst and fatigue are symptoms of dehydration.  When you feel tired, sugary foods and caffeinated beverages help increase your energy level.  Can you see the vicious cycle at work here?

Remember to drink the standard eight cups of water per day.

  • Drink 2 cups of water when you wake up, and then 2 cups with every meal = 8 cups.
  • Drink 1 cup of water every hour while at work.  8 hours = 8 cups.
  • Use it to help you quit drinking soda, for example.  Every time you drink a soda, have water afterwards.

4. Get a Physical.

If it's been a while since you last saw your doctor, it may be a good time to schedule that visit.  Making these healthy changes to your life benefits you in so many ways.  Just be sure to do it with a medical team on your side.

5. Cope with Stress.

Let's face it!  Life is better with a pet.  Having a pet lowers stress and blood pressure.  They help decrease loneliness and depression.  How can a belly rub not make you laugh?!

There are many pets available for adoption at your local rescue shelters, so consider rescuing the very animal that will rescue you.

An added bonus to having a dog, if you so choose, is that they need walks.  This encourages your exercise portion of this getting healthy journey.

Dogs have the ability of serving the needs of their handlers, human, pack leader, etc.  They especially bring a greater level of security to their human with disabilities.

DISCLAIMER: If you are going to have a pet, please be aware of the commitment that it takes to have one.  There is a time factor and a cost factor.  Not to mention, pets get attached to their families.  Giving them away makes them sad too.

Conclusion

Commit to getting healthy and stick to it!

If you have a bad day, the next one is right around the corner.

If today you're not feeling the carrots and hummus, have a 150-calorie bag of chips.

Forgive yourself and get back to the plan!

You can do this and you are worth it!
